Building A Bridge

Back in the winter, torrential rains at the farm in Smithland, Tennessee flooded the creek and sank our little walk-bridge. The walk-bridge was already in place when my parents purchased the farm a few years ago. It was half-assed.

Anyone who knows my Dad knows that he does nothing half-assed. Originally, he was going to repair the small wooden walk-bridge by pulling it back up into place and tying it off to the tree for support. This would have been a quick easy solution for the repair of the walk-bridge. However, it would be a half-assed repair.

Well, I am not sure what got into him but he decided to build a bridge across about an eight foot deep creek that would rival a bridge built by your local government contractor. Constructed of concrete pillars dug into the banks of the creek, steel I-Beams and rough-cut oak lumber this bridge will be around for quite a while.

If you want to see another impressive bridge he has built see the pictures of the 2008 Smithland Fall Festival. That bridge is currently the only covered bridge in Lincoln County, Tennessee. Or so I have been told by the locals. This small creek feeds into the Elk River which runs along the back-side of the 70 acre farm. It is a beautiful piece of property in southern Tennessee and I love spending time there camping, kayaking and spending quality time with family and friends.
